Bangkok's Graffiti Update  - #193
         This month Midnite Hour updates our Night Entertainment Area maps - starting immediately below.   However, before we go further, we should first state that Thailand continues to have some Covid-19 cases, to include deaths, so we are not Covid-free.   Nevertheless, barring an outbreak of another more virulent strain, we are over the Pandemic, and treating Covid (medically and socially) as an "endemic" disease.   Even so, many, to include long term residents are surprised at the rapid rate of recovery in the Tourism and Night Entertainment industries.
         Nana Plaza

         As noted last issue, Thailand had opened up fully to tourism, and now barely a month later, we find Bangkok's Night Entertainment Areas once again bustling with tourists (some more than others, to be sure).   It appears that the evidence is in - generally speaking, hygiene seems to do better than any other method in reducing the chances of Covid infection - to include the vaccine.   (Nevertheless, we should not count out the benefit of partial protection offered by the Covid vaccines - if for no other reason than proof of vaccination allows travel to and from Thailand.)   As we, and the rest of the planet move towards an effective "herd immunity", populations are finding they are comfortable in returning to their normal livelihoods - to include "Entertainment".   Below are the remainder of our Expat Night Entertainment Area maps - showing the re-opening and new openings of Nitespot Venues.   Please feel free to download for your personal use.

A Summary of Current Government Guidelines on Covid-19
Bangkok, 01 August 2022

Reprinted from last month - Guidelines effective since 1 July 2022.

First and foremost, the two biggest obstacles to Thailand returning to "The Old pre-Covid Normal" have been removed :

1. The Thailand Pass requirement has been removed.

2. The US$10,000 health insurance requirement, has been discontinued, thus welcoming all travellers with proof of either a certificate of vaccination, or a pre-arrival negative RT-PCR, or professional ATK test result.

Follows is a summary of changes as posted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand ...

"This information has been updated on 24 June, 2022.

      The following rules will be in effect from 1 August, 2022, with specific requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers from all countries/ territories with scheduled arrivals from this date.

Pre-arrival requirements :

Vaccinated travellers must have the following documents for entering Thailand:

      1. A valid passport, or a border pass for arrivals via border checkpoints.
      2. A Certificate of COVID-19 Vaccination
      3. Everyone 18 years of age and older must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with an approved vaccine at least 14 days before travelling to Thailand.
      4. Travellers 5-17 years of age travelling to Thailand unaccompanied must get vaccinated with at least 1 dose of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before travelling to Thailand.   Those travelling with parents are exempt from this requirement.
      5. Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers must have the following documents for entering Thailand: A valid passport, or a border pass for arrivals via border checkpoints.

On Arrival Requirements :

Upon arriving in Thailand, all travellers must undergo entry screening including body temperature check, and present the required documents to the Immigration/Health Control officer to carry out the checks.

The vaccinated travellers will then be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the Kingdom.   *For arrivals by land using a border pass, they will be allowed a stay of no longer than 3 days within the specified areas only.

Likewise, unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers who have proof of a negative result from an RT-PCR test or professional ATK within 72 hours of travel will be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the Kingdom.

The unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers without a negative test result within 72 hours of travel are required to follow the public health instructions and guidelines as deemed appropriate by the Health Control officer at the point of arrival.   All expenses incurred will be the responsibility of the travellers.

During the Stay :

While in Thailand, both vaccinated and unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers are advised to strictly follow the health and safety standards.   Travellers who are experiencing COVID-like symptoms should get tested.   If testing positive, they must get the appropriate medical treatment."

         Bangkok Eyes notes that the Government can change travel and/or health /safety and/or Night Entertainment policy from time to time, so prospective travellers should update on a regular basis, both with the Tourist Organization of Thailand (TOT), and your local Thai Consulate.   Links immediately below.

  A   1988  NOSTALGIA-RUN
   READER :     Sir,
      U shud have 4 pics from '88.   ...Give the readers a booster in these grim times.

   MIDNITE HOUR:
      We will most definitely pass these old photos on to our readers (one of which appears above - the rest to follow soon).   The years 1988 - 1989 were the peak of the Patpong Night Entertainment phenomenon - the largest number of Night Entertainment Venues - with the greatest variety of entertainment.   This particular photo was taken in Patpong 2 looking toward Surawong Road.   There are a number of noteworthy (historical) items in this pic.   The most noticeable is the notorious upstairs Cleopatra bar, but behind it are the signs for the upstairs Pleasure Connection and the downstairs Top Less Exotic Bar (Top Less, Top Less, Top Less).   Of particular historical interest is the stairway at the right leading up to the Plaza Terrace sign.   The 2nd level Plaza Terrace is known today as "The Ramp".   (A name given the terrace by Bernard Trink when the Plaza Hotel became today's Pavilion Hotel.)   These bits of signage are historically very useful in accurately dating the photos.   Thanks a million for sharing.

Thanks for reading and for writing in.
Don't hesitate to send your questions and comments - always welcome.

 PATPONG  1
MAP
               Patpong 1 continues it's recovery from the Pandemic scourge, albeit slower than the other expat Night Entertainment Areas in Bangkok.   What is needed is a financial intervention.   A number of new or revitalized Nitespot Venues are needed to bring it up to a 'critical' mass' - enough Nitespots to restore it to 'A Destination' for those having a 'night out on the town'.
VIDEO CLIP
 PATPONG  1

       The Japanese-oriented Morimoto has opened up on the 3rd floor above Shenanigans.   The elevators to the upper floors can be accessed from both Patpong 1 and 2.   May they persevere.

 SOI COWBOY
MAP
VIDEO CLIP
Soi Cowboy has now returned to near-full operation - and was once again 'crowded' last weekend..

            Penny Black has expanded into the recently closed The Corner Live Music.   The new extension will likely be open by the time you read this.   Note: last month we mentioned that The Corner Live Music had relocated, having carved a corner out of Kazy Kozy at the other end of the Soi.   To be more precise, the two are co-located - and those visiting Kazy Kozy can likewise enjoy the rocking band.   Let it rock...
 SOI  COWBOY

            Midnite, having closed even before the brunt of the Covid Pandemic struck (February 2020) has reopened - status quo ante.   Let 'er rip, then gents - and ladies...
 SOI  COWBOY

            Likewise, the Spice Girls have fired up their wall of neon and have thrown open the doors (and curtains).   Welcome back to the bright lights, big city...
 SOI  COWBOY

 NANA PLAZA
MAP
              The Nitespot between the 2nd & 3rd levels most recently called Taxi Bar has completed it's renovations and has reopened under the neon Tycoon banner.   Welcome them to the machine...   (BTW, Nana Plaza is saying, "What Pandemic?" )
 NANA  PLAZA

 SOI  NANA
MAP
               The King Night Club has opened newly opposite the Bus Stop bar - restaurant.   We see from the signage they are exclusively for Indian clientele.   They had previously tried to open in the then-Rajah Hotel annex, but quickly closed due to lack of business.   From our observations over the decades we have seen a number of Indian-owned Nitespots prosper, but not so, Indian-owned for Indian clientele.   Perhaps it will be different this time around, now that there are increasing numbers of Indian tourists arriving in the Kingdom in the aftermath of the Pandemic.   Welcome them to the neon circus.
 SOI  NANA  -  (SOI  4  SUKHUMVIT)

               You can't tell me the authorities don't know about this!   ....Oh, wait, it's legal now...   Although we've seen these shops popping up around town (this one in the Nana Hotel parking lot), and we see the plants for sale in the markets, we haven't noticed any big rush to take advantage of all this new freedom.      (Just as was the case when they legalized krathom  [ mitragyna speciosa ] a few months ago.)   Perhaps these items remain cheaper from the original suppliers?   The only place we noticed an overt use of cannabis was that certain 'aroma' pervading Soi Katoey (Silom Soi 4) - either that or no one there is washing their sox...   Jus' sayin'...
 SOI  NANA  -  (SOI  4  SUKHUMVIT)

               A pic for the archives taken at the new The Mani Bar in the Maison Hotel grounds (ex: Rajah Hotel).

         *   Heaven @ 4 Bar - REOPEN

         *   Naree Massage - REOPEN (- Revert back from the V Good Massage name only.)
 SOI  NANA  -  (SOI  4  SUKHUMVIT)

 SOI  KATOEY
MAP
            The tiny Sugarbowl lounge had been closing and reopening with alarming irregularity, finally to fail entirely last month.   In its place is the brand-new Unicorn Bar & Karaoke.   May they be dealt only aces and faces...
 SOI  KATOEY (Silom  Soi  4)

            Venues that transitioned July through 1 August 2022 - not inclusive of the above.
         *   4 Sport's - REOPEN

         *   Welcome Bar - REOPEN
 SOI  KATOEY (Silom  Soi  4)

 SOI  22
MAP
            The previously un-named Nila Bistro (opened last month) has nailed up some new and distinctive signage.   (Located next door to the old Titanium Ice Bar.)   Although technically a 'bistro' with a respectable menu, they are functioning successfully as a bar-beer.   Wish them well in Bangkok's post-Covid neon roulette revival...
 SOI  22

            The Together Bar 22 has newly opened in the Honey Plaza compound.   The Venue appears to be aimed at Japanese clientele, but apparently not exclusively.   Welcome to these neon sois...
 SOI  22

            The unusually named Sup ! Naree has, likewise, opened newly in the Honey Plaza compound.   Get down tonight.   (Before you ask... the Tina at the back of that compound has yet to show any signs of life...)
 SOI  22

            Venues in transition July through 1 August 2022 - not inclusive of the above.
         *   Priva and Private bars combine into double-wide Private - EXPAND

         *   Rita Bangkok Massage - RECLOSED - In Subsoi Lemongrass
 SOI  22

 SOI  AMBASSADOR
            The rapid post-Pandemic resurgence of Nightlife on Soi Ambassador (Sukhumvit Soi 11) has been trumped by the resurgence of foot and vehicular traffic.   And not by just a little bit - the Soi has become so crowded on weekends that, unless you have a specific destination in mind, go somewhere else, or stay home...
VIDEO CLIP

            Lili Fu's Asian Bistro, opening some months ago, has suddenly sprung to life - attracting the 'club set'.   ...Apparently even rap played way too loudly has a considerable following...   (But what do we Bangkok dinosaurs know....?)   May the Force be with them....
 SOI  AMBASSADOR  (Sukhumvit Soi 11)

            We need your help - what does that first sign say?   ...But we digress - the brand new Blaq Lyte has opened in the long-closed Kon Kord lounge (the Kon Kord perished early on in the Pandemic).   May there always be a chin choke in their corner...

 SOI  AMBASSADOR  (Sukhumvit Soi 11)

            Brand-new and out of the blue, the Jiew Wee Bar opened at the end of Soi 11/1.    In spite of location, location, location problems, they are already attracting custom.   May they keep on keeping on...

 SOI  AMBASSADOR  (Sukhumvit Soi 11)

            Venues that transitioned from July through 1 August 2022. -Not inclusive of the above.
         *   Lotus Massage - REOPEN - in Subsoi.

         *   "Tewly Cocktail' group of bar beers opposite the Ambassador Hotel has EXPANDED from 5 to 6 Venues

         *   The Aloft Hotel group of three Venues have REOPENED -
         *   Levels
         *   Crave
         *   WXYZ Bar

         *   Baan Thongdee Massage - REOPEN - in Subsoi.

 SOI  AMBASSADOR  (Sukhumvit Soi 11)

  SOI  7  PLAZA
(And the Soi 7 Bier Garten)
MAP
             As Soi 7 Plaza slowly, marginally, reopens.... the We For You @ 7 moved next door into the recently closed Rumours @ 7 digs, and its "business as usual"...   Gotta let the train roll on.
            Note: The current rumor, apparently with some merit, indicates that the center section of Soi 7 Plaza will be cleared of all bars (it already has been), and a vehicular pathway, ostensibly for fire truck access, will be created - similar to that which was done at Nana Plaza.   (And we know how well that worked out...)   The remaining bars in Soi 7 Plaza will be modified and reopened (see our new map above).   Another rumor circulating by word-of-mouth (also not worth the paper it's written on), is the bars facing Soi 7 are encroaching on the sidewalk, and will have to be modified (cut back) to allow greater pedestrian access...   (Bernard Trink nailed it, "From the rumor mill and thus unconfirmed."
 SOI  7  PLAZA

             The No Bra, one of the recently demolished bars in the center section of the Soi 7 Plaza has moved to the front facing Soi 7, replacing the Corner 7.   The No Bra has a long lineage, having opened on Soi 22 in early '98 - becoming the 'seminal bar' in what would soon become Queen's Park Plaza.   Although the current staff at Soi 7 prefer their old location inside the Plaza, they seem busier where they are now.   (They prefer the interior locations which better facilitate 'open till late'....)
 SOI  7  PLAZA

            Venues that transitioned from July through 1 August 2022. -Not inclusive of the above.
         *   N'Joy - REOPENED, moving into the previous Full Moon digs.

         *   Moonshine Pub - REOPENED

         *   B.R. Bar - REOPENED

         *   Drop In Bar - REOPENED

         *   Leo's Wall - REOPENED

         *   Day & Nice - REOPENED

         *   Two Un-named Bar Beers - OPENED at the back.

            By the time you read this the Healthy Massage will have opened newly next door to the Pan Pan Italian Restaurant.   We see signage promising their staff is adequately vaccinated against Covid.   We, as well, hope their prices remain completive...   May they continue to slip 'n slide.
 SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)

            Last month we noted the closure of Green Room Bangkok blues bar.   This month they have popped back out of the crypt and are going pedal to the metal.   (Left hand side in the photo below).   Welcome back to the nightbeat.   The unnamed bar at the center of the photo is The Entrance, opened newly a month previous, which still has not nailed up any neon...

 OTHER  NITESPOTS  OF  INTEREST

     The August Door Art Of The Month award goes to the The Bronx.   Their 30-foot high signage is 'dual-media' - a permanent sign on top and dynamic projection 'signage' below.   Located across Soi 15 from the (apparently) closed Hooters '2'.

Traces of Bangkok's Early Years

      This month Midnite Hour goes back 52 years to 1965 to highlight what was new in Bangkok's Expat Entertainment Scene.   That year, and the 'late '60's, was the period Patpong began to 'take off'.   We note there were a number of reopenings of established Nitespots, as well as new openings of Venues that would soon become mainstays in the expat Entertainment Scene.

      The Aladdin, one of Patpong Road's favorites in the late 60's featured regular Sunday afternoon musical interludes, and was often billed as their "Jazz Club".   Usually featuring Philippine bands, as was the Rogger Herrera Jr Quintet.   The Aladdin would also feature live music 'till late'...

      The C'est Si Bon opened newly to much fanfare and congratulatory messages in the Press in October of 1965.   And, like several other Night Clubs of the era, opened mid-day for a lunch session.   They gave their primary address as 30 Patpong Road...

      Cafe De Paris Night Club was on Surawong Road, but because it was located just across the road from the top of Patpong 1, it was considered part of the growing Patpong Road scene.   Note their 25 Baht lunches...

      The Plaza Hotel (now the Pavilion Hotel) announced the October '65 reopening of the Thai Room (Thai Room exists today - undergoing renovations).   Also note their invitation to visit their lobby bar The Other Office (still surviving separately today as the Old Other Office Bar).

      The Naturist Night Club -one of Bangkok's pioneer Clubs- was located on Sathorn Road - away from main Night Entertainment Areas (but not far from JUSMAG).   From historical evidence currently available, The Naturist was the first Nitespot in Bangkok to feature A Go-Go dancing as a regular feature (commencing some time later in the 1967 timeframe).   (Their break-through A Go-Go advertisement -previously published here- appeared in the July 1967 After Dark guide book.   Note: other Venues had A Go-Go dancing in these early years, appearing as a part of entertainment groups rotating through from overseas, but not as a permanent attraction.

      The Green Palms Restaurant & Bar (say, 'Night Club'), popular for a number of years, was located across from Gaysorn on Phloenchit Road, contributing to the 'critical mass' of the Night Entertainment Area, as did a number of Venues on Rachdamri / Rachprasong Roads.
